SMS 2025-2026 Title I Parent Involvement Policy

Goal 1: We will participate in One School, One Book by reading the novel Unplugged by Gordon Korman. We will read the novel together as a school over the course of a month, and have an end of book celebration with students the last week of October. We will also have weekly prize drawings based on Google Form participation to earn book money to be spent at the SMS Scholastic book fair.

Goal 2:  We will take seventh grade students to Abingdon, VA to participate in EO Career Commons, which is a hands-on career simulation center. We will project photos and information from the trip at our academic and career planning night to inform parents about their students’ experiences and learning opportunities during the field trip.

Goal 3:  We will send home a Title I student reading intervention letter and a Title I flyer that explains reading intervention goals, assessments, and processes throughout the school year at SMS. Additionally, we will create a Student Reading Plan for all students who failed their previous year’s reading SOL.

Goal 4:  We will attempt to revamp our Academic and Career Planning Night to include content based trivia that encourages parent and student involvement. We will work with our Leadership Committee to plan these activities. This event will provide rising 6th-8th grade students and families with valuable information about literacy,  attendance, academics, mental health and extracurricular opportunities for the upcoming school year. Meals will be provided as well.

Goal 5:  The SMS library added many new titles to our collection at the end of the 2024-2025 school year, including books in other languages for our ELL students and books that focused on diversity. We will promote these books with our students throughout the school year to increase the diversity of their reading content.

Goal 6:  The “Mustang Messenger Parent Blast” email communicates routines and any new information to all parents. This allows parents to know what is happening in our building. The Blast goes out each week in multiple languages.

Goal 7:  During the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, a Title I survey will be shared with school families via the school website, email, and the Remind app as needed. Responses will be used to plan potential future parent involvement opportunities and determine topics for parent engagement sessions.

Goal 8:  We will attend district wide DPAC Meetings, which includes parents, teachers, and administrators that meet each semester to discuss parent involvement and reading initiative needs at our school.
